If you’re like me, you’ve probably had a few different websites in your lifetime. My first website was built on Wix and it was a learning experience. I soon after turned to WordPress and never looked back. This is not an insult to Wix, I enjoyed my experience with the platform. However, I gained more skills in operating WordPress as the primary CMS for both myself and my clients. If you’re not happy with your current Wix domain name, there are a few things you can do to do a Wix domain name change. After reading this blog post, you’ll be a pro!
Purchasing a Domain from Wix
The first option is to purchase a domain directly from Wix. This is the simplest solution and it gives you the most control over your website. You can craft the perfect domain name just as long as it’s available. You can verify its availability using the built-in Wix domain name checker.
To do this, sign up or log in to your Wix account and click on “Domains” in the left-hand sidebar. Then, click on “Connect a New Domain.”
Enter the domain name that you want to use and click “Continue.” If the domain is available, you’ll be able to add it to your cart and purchase it.
Wix also offers you the option of two levels of domain name privacy:
- Full Domain Name Privacy: As the name suggests, your full contact details (name, address, phone number, etc.) will be private and hidden in the WHOIS directory.
- Basic Domain Name Privacy: For this option, only your email address and phone number will be private. If someone wants to contact you, they can do so through a contact form so as to prevent spam.
If your budget can allow it, I recommend that you choose the full domain name privacy option to keep your information safe. However, both options will keep your private information safe from prying eyes.
After this, complete your purchase and your new domain will be connected to your Wix account. Buying a domain name even as a first-timer is always exhilarating!

Connecting a Domain to Wix
If you already have a domain name that you want to use with Wix, you can connect it to your account. To do this, log in to your Wix account and click on “Domains” in the left-hand sidebar. Then, click on “Connect a Domain.”
Enter the domain name that you want to use and click “Continue.” Wix will then walk you through the process of connecting your domain.
When you change your Wix domain name by connecting it to your previous domain, you are carrying out domain mapping. This entails changes to the DNS ( Domain Name System) records or name servers. (Wix recommends that you use the name servers) These changes will re-route traffic from your old domain name to your new Wix site. Wix
However, before you start the transfer, you have to ensure that have a Wix premium plan and you have access to the previous domain registrar’s account that you used to register the domain name.
Connecting Secondary Domains To Your Wix Site
Wix also gives you the option of connecting an unlimited amount of secondary domains to your website. You can use a different domain for each page on your site or use multiple domains to point to your home page.
However, while you can connect as many domains as you want to your Wix site, only the primary domain can be used in the address bar. The other domains will redirect to the primary domain.
To connect a secondary domain, log in to your Wix account and click on “Domains” in the left-hand sidebar. Then, scroll and choose the domain that you wish to connect by clicking “Assign” and then “Next”.
A window will pop up asking you to select the page that you want the domain to redirect to. You can either redirect to the current primary domain or replace that option. Once you’ve made your choice, that’s it!
All you have to do now is wait 24 hours for the changes to take effect and your new domain name will be live!

Transferring Your Domain Name To Wix
The last option is to transfer your domain name to Wix. This option is a bit more complicated than the other two but it gives you more control over your website in the long run.
When you transfer your domain name to Wix, you are essentially changing the registrar of your domain name. Your domain name will still point to your website but you will be able to manage everything from your Wix account.
To transfer your domain name to Wix, you have to connect your domain name to Wix as shown above. Then start the transfer by going to this page.
Enter your domain name and choose “Continue” to start the transfer process. Wix will then walk you through the steps of transferring your domain name.
Keep in mind that when you transfer your domain name to Wix, you will have to unlock your website domain name and once that’s done, tick the box that it was unlocked. Wix will then request the authorization code generated from your previous domain registrar.
Then continue. After which, you will have to renew your domain name for an additional year. The last step is to update contact info and domain privacy protection as mentioned above.
Complete your purchase and your domain name will be transferred to Wix!
