Affiliate marketing is a way to make money online without having your own product. It’s the process of promoting other people’s products and earning commission for each sale that you generate. Amazon has an affiliate program, which means that you can promote their products and get paid when people buy them through your page.
Earning money online by doing affiliate marketing with Amazon can be simple and easy to start. (VERY easy start!). But it takes time and patience to make the most of Amazon affiliate marketing. (But it may be worth it!)
I will show you how affiliate marketing works with Amazon and how you can get started making money online with this retail giant!
What is affiliate marketing?
Simply put, affiliate marketing is the process of promoting another party’s products and when there’s a sale or conversion, you’ll get a commission. It’s a win-win for both parties. You get a commission and the other person gets an affiliate marketing campaign that’s working to drive traffic, leads or sales to their product or service!
Amazon has its own affiliate program called Amazon Associates which you can use to earn money online by doing affiliate marketing. With their very competitive prices, it shouldn’t be hard to convince your visitors to buy a product.
Plus, it’s free for bloggers, content creators, and other internet marketers to sign up! That means that you should have no issue joining the Amazon affiliate program. The problem really comes up when you’re trying to make a sale… but more on that later.
When it comes to Amazon Associates, it mostly entails promoting products that are relevant to your website’s niche. So, if you’re a travel blogger who is sharing amazing places in Europe, then you can promote books about different cities or countries in the region.
You get a custom-generated link that you can put on your blog or social media posts. Then you just sit back and wait for the sales to come in. Of course, to increase your rate of conversions, you have to promote your content across the Internet. Don’t think that it’s entirely passive!
Now you understand what is Amazon’s affiliate program or Amazon Associates, let’s now look at how to be an affiliate for Amazon.
How does Amazon’s affiliate program work?
There are two ways to earn money with Amazon’s affiliate program. You can choose the one that best suits your needs and goals!
You create a website, blog, or social media page and promote Amazon products on it. You can either promote a product directly or use a link that leads to a website where the promotion is present.
When someone clicks on your affiliate link and purchases a product, you get a commission.
The second option is to use the In-Stream method of affiliate marketing. You can do this on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
You create posts that include your affiliate link to Amazon products. When someone clicks the link in your post and buys the product, you earn a commission.
The great thing about this method is that it’s very easy to scale up your affiliate marketing. You can just create more posts and share them with people to get even more commission opportunities!
Here is a quick summary to make sure we got this down pat!
Become an Amazon Affiliate by creating a profile
You get an Amazon Associate ID that’s unique to you
Once your profile is approved you can start creating Amazon Affiliate links
Take this link and place it on your website, blog or social media posts
Once your audience clicks on the link and purchases anything over the next 24 hours, you get a commission for that sale.
How much money can I make from Amazon Affiliates Program?
The Amazon Associates program is very competitive for affiliate marketers. It’s not that hard to join the program so you’re up against thousands of other affiliate marketers competing for the same sales.
However, it’s still possible to make a decent amount of money by doing affiliate marketing with Amazon.
The overall amount is going to depend on how much you invest into your campaign and the traffic that it gets. It’s also influenced by the quality of your content, how well you target your audience, and how frequently you post new affiliate links.
So as you can see, it’ll take a lot of work to generate online income with Amazon Affiliates. It’s hard to get an exact number since the income depends on a variety of factors.
But we can start off by looking at the Amazon Affiliates commission rate as of 2021:
So as you can see, your commission rate will differ depending on your niche. For example, if you’re promoting beauty items you’ll get around a 3% commission rate. So if you sell a face cream for $35 with a 3% commission rate, you’ll get $1.05 for each sale of this item.
Another thing that you should note is that your customer has to make the purchase within 24 hours after clicking on your link. If that 24 hours period has passed, then you won’t earn a commission. Likewise, if your customer leaves Amazon after clicking on your affiliate link and then clicks on another’s affiliate link and makes a purchase, you won’t earn the commission.
However, if they add the item to their shopping cart after using your affiliate link, then that’s a different story. You’ll still earn a commission if they buy the item before 90 days.
Furthermore, you can earn a commission on other products that your customer purchases 24 hours after clicking on your link.
Amazon’s affiliate marketing rules and regulations
Before you become an Amazon affiliate, here are just a few rules and regulations you should be aware of. This way there won’t be any surprises down the road when it comes to earning money online with Amazon. Plus, if you choose to not educate yourself or not comply with the rules, then you can get banned from the program.
1. Don’t use shorteners on your Amazon affiliate links
This is a big one and has gotten many affiliate marketers in trouble. Once you link your site to Amazon, make sure that you use the full URL or Amazon-approved shortened link. Don’t run to Bitly or other URL shorteners to make your link more ‘appealing’.
2. Don’t use affiliate links in forum signatures, blog comments, or social media bios, offline campaigns, paid searches, emails, or even eBooks.
These are all different ways that affiliate marketers have violated the Amazon Associate rules.
Don’t use your personal name, brand, or website URL in the link instead of using a tracking ID
It’s best to keep your affiliate link anonymous. The only time you should use your personal name is if it’s a brand that you’re trying to promote and not a product.
Don’t create multiple accounts under the same name or use other people’s names
This is against Amazon’s policies, so it’s best to just stick with one account.
ALWAYS disclose that you earn a percentage of any referrals on your site.
“We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.”
Do not make any false recommendations, always give your honest opinions.
Don’t say that a product is good if it’s not. Likewise, you can’t give a negative review just because you have to or someone paid you to. Amazon has a strict policy against paid reviews, as well as fake and biased ones. Your affiliate link can be blocked if they find out that you’re violating their policies.
Don’t post affiliate links on a blog or website with inappropriate content
Amazon is very strict about this, so it’s best to just not post affiliate links on sites that violate their policies including pornography, hate speech, and plagiarism.
Don’t refer to prices on your website since they’re always changing.
If you’re going to post affiliate links on your website, then it’s best that you leave out the price and lead them directly to the Amazon product page. By doing this, you can save your audience the trouble of finding a different price than the one you mentioned on your platform.
Be sure that you follow the rules listed above so your affiliate account won’t be shut down. You don’t want to lose out on all that money just because you didn’t follow the rules, right?
Can you effectively promote your Amazon affiliate links without going against its policies?
If you had favorable responses to these questions, then maybe you can make money online by doing affiliate marketing with Amazon.
Create your platform for your brand
Now that you’ve decided to join the Amazon Associates Program, it’s time for you to create your platforms. This can be a blog, website, YouTube channel, or social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Ensure that you understand the niche, goals, growth strategies, and targeting strategies of your platform or brand.
To earn money with the Amazon affiliates program, these platforms have to be active. You don’t need a large following or content since you can just grow those over time. Once you stick to the policies, then you can slowly earn money using this program.
Create quality content that people can easily relate to without having to sell directly in your content. Also, when you do affiliate marketing with Amazon, be sure to only post authentic and relevant reviews for your audience or readers can tell that your content is just trying to sell them products.
Lastly, be consistent on your platforms and engage with other users or readers. This way they’ll be more inclined to buy the products that you recommend.
Sign up for the Amazon affiliate marketing program
To sign up for the Amazon affiliate marketing program, you have to first create an account on their website. The process is pretty easy and quick especially if you follow these steps.
Once you have an account, the next step is to fill out your profile information and choose a website category that best describes your platform. This also includes informing Amazon of your primary platform, how you gain traffic and how do you monetize your platform. Also, create a store ID. I recommend that you choose a store ID that resembles your primary platform.
After filling out the required information, you’ll need to accept Amazon’s terms and conditions for their program before you can proceed.
Add your payment method and Tax information. You can also choose to add your tax information either now or later.
When you’ve created your Amazon Affiliate account successfully, you are then sent to your homepage where you can track all transactions, generate links and monitor your earnings.
You can also create links to Amazon products on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook through the tools available in your affiliate account.
How to get Amazon affiliate links
An Amazon affiliate link is a unique URL that can be used to promote products in the Amazon Associates Program. This type of link helps you track the number of clicks to the products you recommend. There are different ways how to generate affiliate links for Amazon.
When creating an account with Amazon Associates, you’ll be given a unique link for every product. To get your Amazon affiliate links you can either generate the link using the ASIN of the product or you can simply search the product.
But another alternative (and the one that I prefer) is to use Amazon Site Stripe. It allows you to create affiliate links quickly even during the browsing of the store. You also have the option to create the shortened version of the link, text only, image only, or text with an image.
You can add your link throughout your relevant content, while also avoiding offline promotional materials like eBooks, email, and even PDF documents.
To make the most of Amazon affiliate marketing, you’ll need to ensure that you select one specific niche. It must be something that you know and love. It will also help if the niche is more on e-commerce so iblt would give you an idea of what products to recommend. There’s a wide range of niche categories to choose from such as fashion, health and beauty, electronics, sports equipment, books, and more.
It also wouldn’t hurt to do some research on products that you can promote so you can build a solid and relevant blogging content strategy.
Create a blogging strategy
Another thing to keep in mind when doing affiliate marketing with Amazon is that you need to know your audience. You also have to understand what they want and how to best reach them. So creating a blogging strategy is key in ensuring that you’ll be able to engage your audience and build a strong community that will benefit you and your business in the long run.
What does a blogging strategy look like?
A good blogging strategy consists of content that will help your audience solve a specific problem or challenge. It can also be educational and entertaining, which makes it more appealing to readers who are looking for information that’s worth their time.
Once your blog is up and running, you can then start promoting Amazon products through affiliate links to help generate additional revenues for your business.
You can also build a strong community through networking and social media as well as by engaging with your blog’s followers.
Some examples of blogging content strategy that can help you promote your Amazon products is writing comparison posts or product review posts.
The next thing you’ll need to do is to select the product that you will honestly recommend or not. There are a lot of products on Amazon and it can be quite overwhelming to choose one when there’s a lot to choose from.
The great thing about these posts is that they’re high-converting since people are already looking for information about the product. So that means more traffic for you and higher chances of being able to recommend an Amazon affiliate link.
With a strong blogging content strategy and proper promotion, you can easily earn money online with Amazon affiliate marketing.
Blogging or posting content consistently is the key to your success with affiliate marketing.
When you post regularly, it keeps people engaged and they’ll be more likely to come back to check your latest content.
It also helps if you use social media to tell people about what you’ve published on your blog or website, as well as how they can benefit from it.
You should also encourage your audience to share the content that you post, which will then help you build a strong community and also increase your visibility.
You’ll need to create unique and helpful content for your audience or readers. Content is the key to your success.
Is Affiliate Marketing with Amazon the right choice for you?
Now that you fully understand what is affiliate marketing and how it works with Amazon, then this marketing option may be perfect for you.
However, if you’re just starting out and don’t have a lot of funds to invest, then affiliate marketing isn’t for you. Affiliate marketers are paid commissions when they refer other people to sign up or purchase a product.
But since affiliate marketing is a digital business, you’ll need to make sure that your website or blog has the necessary features and requirements needed to make it work.
For example, your website should be able to rank well in the search engines so you can generate more traffic and get people to purchase the products you’re promoting.
If your website or blog is new, it’s going to take time before Google ranks it well. You’ll need to invest a significant amount of time and money first before you can start earning revenue from affiliate marketing.
So is it worth all the effort?
Well, you’ll need to do the math to make the most of what the Amazon affiliate marketing program has to offer.
